Red-pied Friesian cattle

Not only the colour of the fur is characteristic of red-pied Friesian cattle, but the breed is also strongly-built and well-meated.

Exterior features

  • Strong and even muscle mass.
  • Strong legs and claws.
  • Well-meated body with deeply curved ribs.
  • Croup height from 130 to 145 centimetres (approximately 4.3 to 4.8 feet).
  • Sturdy udder with well-built and well-positioned teats.

The red-pied Friesian cow has sharply-defined red areas (fields) and a broad, white belt at shoulder height. The abdomen is white, the neck preferably completely red. The legs and tail plume are white up to the front knee and heel. The white star on the head is triangular in shape. The deep red colour of the head verges on black.

Unique characteristics

  • Strong, vital animals.
  • Good fertility.
  • Efficient feed utilization (sober).
  • Strong legs and claws.
  • Agreeable during milking.
  • The milk contains high percentages of fat and protein.

Although the milk production of the red-pied Friesian cow is lower than that of its Holstein-Friesian equivalent, this cow is extremely suitable for farming.

Compared to the Holstein-Friesian, the red-pied Friesian cow has evidently less decline, fewer udder and claw problems. The life expectancy is longer and their fertility is considerably higher.
